A Birder Reads a Scientific Paper

Several years ago, I read about the enormous colonies of breeding birds in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and I did some research to satisfy my curiosity. ( Google Scholar is an excellent resource and free full-text PDFs can be located for many papers, particularly when research is taxpayer-funded.

I visited Hong Kong from February 20-27, 2014. And even though transportation is so easy and inexpensive, prepare to walk a lot. Do your research. I read that the Peak was a great place for thrushes in winter; experience proved the veracity of that observation, but you’ll need to examine the underbrush closely.

So, all this makes birding this place an occasionally less than pleasant experience. The disadvantage is that this is not a typical parrotbill at all – it is a bit like the old joke of searching for your keys not where you lost them, but where there is plenty of light to facilitate the research.
