So armed with some knowledge from the “ Access Considerations for Birding Locations ” page on the Birdability website and some research, I twice visited the Tualatin River National Wildlife Refuge near Portland, Oregon with accessibility in mind. A 5% grade is steeper than I thought, but research suggests that 5% is acceptable.

eBird Economics: How Much Would You Pay to See Birds?

How much do birders value a birding experience? The economic “impact” of a birding festival can be estimated by looking at expenditures of attendees ( e.g., hotel rooms, meals, souvenirs, transportation costs, etc.). I emailed the authors and asked about their research and their use of eBird data.

What I have always missed there and what I still miss is to experience presence of the European Beaver. All suburbs within the Pancevacki rit are serviced by Belgrade public transport, but from them, it may be 1 to 3 miles more to reach the levees. What else was to be found in that waterworld?

Kooyman was there to work at McMurdo Station (a large American research station that we hear about throughout the book) as technical assistant on a science mission involving fish.

They know how to trap raptors and if something is interesting nearby, they will try to band it for research. When Merlins first started nesting in the Twin Cities metro area, one of the birds had a band. Not always.

Several years ago, I read about the enormous colonies of breeding birds in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and I did some research to satisfy my curiosity. ( Google Scholar is an excellent resource and free full-text PDFs can be located for many papers, particularly when research is taxpayer-funded.
