In the mid-1970s, a local breeder was burglarized and a few of his birds escaped, after which the breeder released his remaining stock of about 50 birds 1. The following maps I created on eBird show the dramatic growth in the spread of the Eurasian Collared-Dove from 2002 to 2014. In warm climates they can breed year round.

Black-vented Shearwater can be abundant in southern California waters some years, as they have 2013-2014. Gull-billed Terns breed in south San Diego Bay, along with Black Skimmers and several other tern species. Riparian areas and springs can yield Lawrence’s Goldfinch , and Brown-crested Flycatcher is a local breeder.

From a global low of less than 300 birds in the late 80’s, the species has recovered to 2726, according to a survey in early 2014. Habitat destruction, disease and hunting are still major problems that affect the conservation efforts, but the breeding sites and wintering grounds now have international protection.
