I was just getting back into birding, and had only gone to some urban sites, during 2012 and 2013. But when on June 23, 2013 I decided to follow a road just to see where it led, and it led to Pino Real, it was the first in a whole chain of exciting site discoveries. But, thank God, it has not. Mountain Trogons are also still present!

I feared the swifts had already abandoned this area for parts south. I though that the bird below was going to be the best bird of my weekend. Luckily, as I enjoyed this beer and several others with friends, I spied a Chimney Swift fluttering aloft. Seeing one lets me hold on to summer for just a bit longer!

Although apparently preferring weedy secondary growth and even tolerating abandoned banana plantations, it is unable to survive the wholesale destruction of its lowland habitat for beachside tourism and Euterpe sp. palm plantations (the same palm that produces açai berries, one of the latest health crazes). Since then, we have seen a marvellous recovery, with an estimate of 123 in 2012, 145 in 2013, 165 in 2014, 197 in 2015 and now in 2016, around 232 Great Bustards roam the wilds of Germany, nearly doubling their number within just a handful of years! Follow the track through a gap in the pine tree plantation and immediately turn right.
