I very much enjoyed the first section, which relates the history of the bird and its relationship with us, humans, from its discovery in 1851 up to the fateful Lake Mack fire and its aftermath in the 1980’s. A nest wasn’t found until 1903, which set off a craze for Kirtland’s Warbler skins, nests, and eggs.

2011 is about to become 2012 and birders the world over are taking a look at their year lists and reminiscing about the awesome sightings and devastating dips that they have experienced. On Seymour Island, my group witnessed a very human-like interaction amongst three boobies , one female and two males.

That is a big difference compared to the 2,000+ singing males detected in 2012, well above the recovery goal for this species set by the U.S. But within a couple of decades, it’s effects on both wildlife and humanity became apparent. They were secure in their isolated home here until humanity came to Laysan in the 1890s.

In contrast, the females need to make sure not to get duped into raising actual cuckoos – the buntings are a targeted host species ( source ). Fortunately for the buntings, they seem to detect most cuckoo eggs smuggled in (75% in one study). Maybe there is some justice in this world after all. Better safe than sorry.
