Poor Nesting Success for Wading Birds in South Florida

In 2012, for the third straight year, wading birds in south Florida had poor nesting success. Only 26,395 nests were started in 2012, a 39 percent decline compared to the decadal average. Most hard-hit were federally endangered Wood Storks , which saw all 820 nests fail or be abandoned.

Paradise Regained

I was just getting back into birding, and had only gone to some urban sites, during 2012 and 2013. I would have guessed it would be the first species to abandon this now-disturbed site. Among all the birding locations I have found, Pino Real was my first love. But, thank God, it has not. Mountain Trogons are also still present!

The Incredulous New Caledonian Crows

The next graph shows the average number of times per trial that the crow decided to abandon an effort to get at the food. But, the number of abandonments is greater than zero for the case of the Unknown Causal Agent. Having said that, note that the rate of abandonment even in this case is small, but still, not zero.

Birding Sarajevo or the sentimental journey home

And in the middle of a heatwave of the 2012 summer, I was heading to Sarajevo and Jahorina Mountain, a major venue of the 1984 Winter Olympics. The road was new, the only sign of the recent times were bullet holes in a few abandoned houses, but that was a rare sight. No other scars were visible.

Reddell Beach shorebirds

This past week has seen thousands of shorebirds roosting on Reddell Beach having abandoned Simpson’s Beach near the port now our winds are starting to change as the season changes. There was a mutiny aboard the brigantine “Ethel” and several crew members were massacred as well as Captain Reddell.
