First Phoebe of 2019

10,000 Birds

I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2019 this morning at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge. 2016 – 18 March. 2012 – 15 March. Actually, I saw my first five phoebes there, perhaps the most I ever saw in one location for my first of the season. For me, it is now officially spring! 2019 – 17 March. 2018 – 30 March.

First Phoebe of 2017

I saw my first migratory Eastern Phoebe of 2017 this morning, 12 March, at Jamaica Bay Wildlife Refuge, thus kicking off spring for myself over a week early. 2016 – 18 March. 2012 – 15 March. It’s also the earliest I’ve had over the last ten years. 2017 – 12 March. 2015 – 28 March. 2014 – 29 March. 2013 – 24 March.

Twitching

For the past several years I have been taking advantage of our many National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) here in Northern California. This leads me to my third twitch for the celebrated Falcated Duck ( Anas falcata ) at Colusa National Wildlife Refuge in January of 2012. This was a no-brainer. I found it within 30 minutes.

Birds of Central America: A Field Guide Review

But, there is the excellent Peterson Field Guide to Birds of Northern Central America: Belize, El Salvador, Guatemala, Honduras by Jesse Fagan and Oliver Komar, with illustrations by Robert Dean and Peter Burke, published in 2016. Some features to consider: Birds of Central America is a big book. The older field guides don’t.
