It turns out that duck nests tend to be so similar that you need to identify the feathers lining the nest, usually the breast feathers of the parent, to identify the user. In 2011 their population was estimated at over 3,000 individuals, increasing steadily at 5-8% every year. However, they were refound on Buldir Island, a remote island that never had any introduced mammals. A curious Laysan Duck takes a stroll at Midway Atoll. The Blackbird die-off that was observed in north-west Baden-Württemberg, neighbouring parts of Rheinland-Pfalz and southern Hessen in 2011 was caused by the Usutu Virus. Its host range includes mosquitoes of the genus Culex , birds, and mammals, with the mosquitoes acting as the virus’ principal vector.
