Sarah Atlas is a search-and-rescue dog handler, one of many civilian volunteers who serve with New Jersey Task Force 1. Shortly after arrival, her group got the call that the dogs were needed. She reports that Anna definitely picked up on the stress that her handler was feeling. Anna had to be put down 11 months later.

Within weeks, with lots of love, patience, and socializing with other tenants and pets, she was a totally different dog. Ever since I got her, she’s been an absolutely wonderful dog. She is now the happiest and most popular dog in the building, she’s my little soul mate, and she loves everybody!! At 1:30 a.m.

Dogs are able to detect diseases such as cancer and diabetes and warn humans of impending heart attacks and strokes. Dogs Sniffing Out Disease. As we know, dogs have a keen sense of smell. More research is needed, but initial studies by the Pine Street Foundation and others on using dogs for diagnosis are promising.

The good news is that Kirtland’s Warbler numbers are up, 1,828 singing males counted in the 2011 census. The material on Bermuda is particularly engrossing, illustrating what it is like to be a researcher in a remote area of the seemingly-glamorous Bahamas, studying birds and counting berries at sites called the Goat Farm and Dead Dog Road.
