The first time we ever observed an Australian Painted Snipe was on Grant’s birthday in 2011 near Broome and since then we have had numerous other encounters, but this year for the first time we have seen them both nesting and with young. Podicipediformes, aka Grebes, are freshwater diving duckish birds that are not ducks. Some of the lakes they breed on have been stocked with salmon and trout. And, the Mink are capable of wiping out large portions of a breeding colony in a short period. At both breeding seasons five lakes contained near 85% of the population.

Our last visit to Herdsman Lake was in winter in June 2011 and last Sunday was a beautiful hot summer day and most people appeared to be inside as we spent several hours circumnavigating the lake system. There were also plentiful numbers of Pink-eared Ducks , Grey Teal, Pacific Black Ducks and Hardheads. Musk Duck -male.

Kirtland’s Warbler is a classic niche species; they breed in only very specific conditions, which occur in only a very specific area. this species breeds. Fortunately, there were still a handful of immature birds alive at sea, and a few years later they were back on Toroshima breeding again.

More than 1 million birds, including tundra swans, snow geese and countless ducks, stop to rest and gather strength in these undisturbed wetlands each autumn. About three billion birds fly north to the Boreal Forest each spring to build nests and lay eggs. This is a photograph of the same area in 2011.
