2011 is about to become 2012 and birders the world over are taking a look at their year lists and reminiscing about the awesome sightings and devastating dips that they have experienced. This year I watched them from the day they arrived , until two chicks successfully hatched, the northernmost breeding record for the species.

There’s some excitement in putting up feeders and in discovering which species are gracing us with big invasions this year (2011, Montana: Snowy Owls ) but much of the time its a slog. A pair of Bald Eagles scopes out the Clark Fork for likely snags. And that season is coming to meet them.

Kirtland’s Warbler is a classic niche species; they breed in only very specific conditions, which occur in only a very specific area. this species breeds. Fortunately, there were still a handful of immature birds alive at sea, and a few years later they were back on Toroshima breeding again. That would have been awful.

Bald Eagle, Head Portraits, Birds of Prey of the East. Bald Eagle has been moved next to Golden Eagle. Wheeler notes that some of the maps from the Raptors books are reused, but in updated format, and he encourages readers to keep the maps updated as hawk locations and breeding sites change.

During the last visit in 2011, I was fortunate to see all three Rosy-Finch species at Red Rocks Park. I did find some photographs used in both guides, notably the impressive male Bald Eagle and the 2015 ABA Bird of the Year, Green Heron. (Disclosure time: I bird Florida, mostly the southeast area, several times a year.
