Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. She wasn’t about to leave her rabbit, and the driver figured something was wrong, so he picked her up. One of the animal keepers brought her to me, and I put her in my clinic. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.

Not only were they a common bird, they were a common bird nearshore; indigenous peoples hunted them up and down the coast. In 2011 their population was estimated at over 3,000 individuals, increasing steadily at 5-8% every year. Birds aren’t the only animals who have made strong comebacks thanks to the Endangered Species Act.
