Just before Thanksgiving, 2010, a driver spotted a Red-tailed hawk sitting on a dead rabbit in the middle of the road. She wasn’t about to leave her rabbit, and the driver figured something was wrong, so he picked her up. Finally, the decision was made to release her in the summer of 2011. And to prove it, there’s The Queen.

10,000 Birds

Not only were they a common bird, they were a common bird nearshore; indigenous peoples hunted them up and down the coast. In 2011 their population was estimated at over 3,000 individuals, increasing steadily at 5-8% every year. They were secure in their isolated home here until humanity came to Laysan in the 1890s.
