Powerful Owl in the Royal Botanical Gardens-Sydney

We had not observed a Powerful Owl since we were living in Portland, Victoria for a few months in 2009, so once the opportunity arose to go looking for one at the Royal Botanical Gardens in Sydney we took it! Powerful Owls are the largest nocturnal bird in Australia and the largest of the owl species.

Due to the fact that we will still be camping and birding when this goes online I thought I could share some photos of a well-known marsupial in the southern parts of Australia. We spent two months in Portland, Victoria in late 2009 with Grant’s work and whenever we could we were birding.

Protecting nesting birds

Over the past week I have continued to monitor the Pied Oystercatchers along our coast and as usual I observe the birds fight against predation of both their eggs and chicks. I thought you would like to know that there are some birds here on the Australian mainland that actually have protection.
