Hawks At A Distance was one of the first books I reviewed for 10,000 Birds and I’ve decided to rerun it this month, partly to remind us all to read and use it, and partly because I’m preparing for a birding trip out of the country and I need all my brain power to make sure I pack the right camera lenses and hats.

Birding Sarajevo or the sentimental journey home

Having said that, my sentimental journey started without a plan, more by accident, on an AGM of BirdLife Slovenia in Ljubljana in 2005. Right: Water Pipits landing on my car and sliding down the windscreen. The scorching sun was right above my head. Overhearing that, the waiter came and introduced himself “I am from Kosovo”.

Sure, they’re beautiful and powerful, a reminder of the feral freedom of the skies. He is also the author of my current favorite hawk book, Hawks From Every Angle: How To Identify Raptors In Flight (PUP, 2005). Many of the full-page photographs are lovely in their own right, not just as teaching tools.)

On Ducks and Geese

Reading Deb's post about the goslings at Poplar and getting Jenny 's request to sign a petition to save the Canada geese of Ballwin, Missouri from mass extermination reminded me how much I miss the wildlife at the neighborhood we lived in from 2002-early 2005. Now I have the drama of the feral cats and of course the greyhounds.
