Despite the fact that efforts are made to ensure they are not imprinted on humans, they are naturally confiding, even friendly. Such an intimate encounter with one of the world’s rarest birds was a memorable experience. Shooting remains a major threat to this population, for the Italians are still passionately keen on hunting.

After securing our passage, I patiently waited for this once-in-a-lifetime experience to a place we have never been and lacked any knowledge of, we were in for a complete surprise. It has had very few humans walk its soil and who have had little impact to this otherwise pristine nature. Salvin’s Prion. and seabirders.

It really makes you realise how sensitive the human body is to humidity variations. The weather over the last few years has not been wet enough to have them visit from the north and the last time we saw one in the area was in November 2003. Another odd item of nature on the way back was the return of the Procession Caterpillars !

Non-bird watchers without binoculars and experience are notoriously bad sources of information. The new offspring of that year hang back and leave later, finding their way to their wintering grounds using something other than experience, and something other than being taught by their parents. More alarm calling. Apparently.
