Birding Balangshan, Sichuan, China (part 1)

Mid-May to Mid-Jun is the best time to see some of the most exciting species here, as this is the prime breeding time. For another species, the Firethroat , it meant I only got acceptable views rather than the really good ones reportedly possible a few weeks earlier. Still, not a bird that merits flying 2000 km from your hometown.

Edward’s Pheasant

It has recently been reclassified as Critically Endangered on the IUCN Red List; this category is reserved for only the most threatened species in the world. It has not been seen in its small home range in central Vietnam since around 2000. Conservationists searched intensively in 2011 but found none.

Big Ticks; What Was Your Last New Family?

Not that I don’t enjoy seeing new species myself, it’s just that they are an easy target and I am nothing if not lazy and mean spirited. I got my first Emus ( Dromaius novaehollandiae ), family Casuariidae, in West Australia back in 2000. I often poke fun at listers I perceive as being more interested in ticks than birds.
