Slaughter Lake does not sound like it would be a nice place to visit but we three Americans, my small family, were blissfully unaware of what Schlachtensee translates to before our expedition there. It is at the edge of the Grunewald, or Green Forest, which is alleged to have Black Woodpeckers haunting its depths.

The Eurasian Wryneck is the woodpecker that doesn’t look like a woodpecker, the bird with the portmanteau name that is also a medical condition (and which may remind some people of a Nora Ephron essay). But they are woodpeckers: the genus Jynx of the subfamily Jynginae of the Picidae family. It’s an open question.

Anyway, it is a very cute little woodpecker that eBird calls “unique, tiny” Its drum sound can be surprisingly loud for a bird this size. According to one study , they preferred bushes, rivers, and reed beds, but avoided open agricultural landscape and anthropogenic areas (which presumably includes karaoke bars).

It is a very interesting read, and as I stated in the post I wrote on my blog , part of the team that wrote the plan is the Wisconsin Department of Natural Resources, one of the states proposing a Sandhill Crane slaughter. We have given an awful exhibition of slaughter and destruction, which may serve as a warning to all mankind. Of course, by now most people know they have been slaughtered by hunters for their ivory. This is a very disturbing video of Sandhill Cranes being slaughtered by “hunters.” Well, except maybe you.
