We recently got an email about the dangers currently being faced by our whale population as a result of a recent proposal to legalize commercial whaling. As whale lovers, and people who hope to one day be able to see them in the wild, we wanted to share this information with you in case you would like to get involved.

A bountiful crop of krill and busy shipping lanes are to blame for a rash of dead whales that have surfaced around the Bay Area within a few short months, according to scientists. We're definitely seeing an increase in ship strikes - it's awful," said Mary Jane Schramm, spokeswoman for the Gulf of the Farallones National Marine Sanctuary.

These mangroves function as a sanctuary for fish and other animals that then make their way as adults across the channel to the coral reefs that surround the island. Swimming with a whale shark on the boat-trip to Isla Isabel. It is a wonderful spot to watch the humpback whales breach in the crystal-clear waters.

At sea there are also New Zealand Sea Lions and Southern Right Whales. North of Dunedin is Orokonui , a wildlife Sanctuary modeled on Karori with a fence to keep introduced mammals out. For a limited time during late September and early October the sanctuary will also be hosting Sirocco, the ambassadorial Kakapo !
