I emailed the authors and asked about their research and their use of eBird data. Birders derive “value” from birding.

Kooyman (co-author with Jim Mastro) spent decades studying Emperor Penguins and can be considered the world’s foremost expert on the species. Empire Penguins (Aptenodytes forsteri) are the largest living penguin species, almost four feet tall (taller when they stretch), and the least likely to be seen on birding or nature trips.

Several years ago, I read about the enormous colonies of breeding birds in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and I did some research to satisfy my curiosity. ( Google Scholar is an excellent resource and free full-text PDFs can be located for many papers, particularly when research is taxpayer-funded. It is all business.

Homing pigeons were apparently able to find their way home after being transported in a closed box a long distance away (many hundreds of miles in some cases). The same researcher then did the same thing but with big magnets strapped to the children’s heads. Back then, it was known that birds were pretty good navigators.
