We didn’t know what to expect from the train that had at one time been used to transport bananas to the coast and is now used to transport ecotourists to the wildlife refuge. Yes, you read that right, two FREAKING MANGROVE CUCKOOS perched OUT IN THE OPEN! Not only that, but we had a train ride to look forward to!

Birding across the north of Australia in July

On other occasions we would encounter numerous caravans being towed or large trucks up to 54 metres long transporting fuel or cattle and we would wisely leave the bitumen if it was not a full width road and let the larger vehicles pass. We also encountered water monitors and a variety of other smaller reptiles.
