We had a blast, the family and I, and experienced some amazing natural places, to say nothing of the fine city of Seattle. To go by the numbers, I saw 79 species of bird while in Washington (150 county ticks), 21 of which were year birds and 8 of which were lifers. The Lucky Diner on First Avenue in Seattle has delicious food.

The deaths are a violation of the Marine Mammals Act and, because it’s a protected species, the shooting death of a Steller sea lion also violates the federal Endangered Species Act. Tags: wildlife crime seattle marine animals sea lions. Of course, will be there sufficient resources expended to catch the killers?

On Monday, a sea lion was found dead on West Seattle’s Lincoln Park beach. The animal protection group Seal Sitters says a necropsy showed that the sea lion had suffered a shark bite and had twisted intestines in addition to a bullet wound. Investigators say they do not know who is responsible.

This wonderful piece of birding real estate can be found 8 miles east of Olympia, and an hour’s drive south of Seattle Washington, right along the I-5 corridor. Unfortunately, while I was still living in the Seattle area, I had discovered the Nisqually Refuge to late, just weeks prior to setting sail south.

This remarkable area is best know for its huge wall that was used for centuries to protect the city from invasion, but for me, the Conwy RSPB refuge was fantastic. From here, we were headed towards London, and our final flights back to the US and Seattle. US Species 101. Australia Species 242. Mexico species 148.

The end of this rather long road trip finds us here in Puyallup, Washington which is just south of Seattle. In 1974, Nisqually National Wildlife Refuge was established to protect the delta and its diversity of fish and wildlife habitats. Over 200 species of birds can be found on the refuge, depending on the time of year.
