Once one bears in mind that it is this comparative assessment that is required, then it seems to me there will be a strong case (1) for Humane Slaughter, and humane treatment prior to slaughter, and (2) insofar as really painless and comfortable animal-raising is not attained or attainable, giving vegetarianism a try, at least.

That is, if what the vegetarian wants is that we should stop eating meat even if we like eating it and even if our liking for it greatly exceeds our revulsion at the suffering of animals in being raised and slaughtered for food, then a decision to stop eating meat would seem to amount to a decision of principle.

Cows, domestic sheep, chickens and many others would not survive if they were not raised for human consumption, protected from malnutrition, disease and predators. If we are not justified in eating mackerel ourselves, are we not also morally obligated to stop the slaughter brought on by the tuna? David Peters New York, Nov.

Eventually, I found the lone whooping crane present at the refuge by its call. Letters from Eden (Houghton Mifflin, 2006) will soon be followed by a memoir about the birds she has raised, healed, studied and followed throughout her life. I knew I’d never heard that before. Nobody needs to eat them. Thank you for your efforts.

They are often present on Laysan Island and Kure Atoll as well; a female-female pair on Kure Atoll have yet to involve a male in nesting activities. However, the age of the Golden Gooney was to come to a brutal end; beginning in the late 1800′s, they were being slaughtered by the millions for their feathers at their breeding colonies.
