Wildlife conservation is concerned with protecting wildlife at the level of species or perhaps population. From a conservation perspective the poisoning of rats was a no-brainer, a single application of poison over a relatively small area would protect the future of a species.

Getting rid of rabbits and goats was something that had been done for many years, but it was generally thought that rats and cats would be impossible to remove from all but the smallest islands. New Zealand faces massive challenges in protecting its species. The other obvious solution was to make more predator-free islands.
