For a few, only a few, species actually winter in Central and South America, and summer up here in Mexico. Mexicans, always careful to avoid offense, more politely name this bird “ puerquito “, suggesting that its call sounds like a pig’s oink. And there is some sweetness in these bittersweet months.

The Yellow-green Vireo is another of those rare birds that winter in South America but only travels north as far as Mexico to breed. I hope that the next time it will vocalize for me; it apparently sounds something like a grunting pig. However, there is no mistaking the male Red-headed Tanager with any other species.

It is one of those interesting few species that winter in South America, but only migrate as far north as Mexico to breed. I saw the movement, I swear I did, but it wasn’t until June of this year that I really saw this bird. And then saw it again, a month later.

“Indigenous pig sows?…Sure, …Sure, we got lots of ‘em javelina and wild hogs too” But I explained to him that I was a hunter of a different kind and that I was looking for tiny owls and not wild pigs. After all, this species is a widespread and common bird in Central and South America.
