The main difference is that Foer doesn't eat meat (though he does, as it turns out, eat some animal products) and he challenges the cultural assumptions that tell us that some animals are for petting and some are for eating. But the net message is the same: factory farming=bad, small farms=good. It's okay to choose enslavement.

Why choose enslavement, rape, domination and slaughter? Many people support this, particularly affluent types, who have become dog and cat people and now own them as "pets." So we went from a ban to a vague statement about the prevention of abuse that clearly doesn't consider slaughter abusive. Where do people get that idea?

Farm animals also benefit from the humane farming movement, even if the animal welfare changes it effects are not all that we should hope and work for. If we are not justified in eating mackerel ourselves, are we not also morally obligated to stop the slaughter brought on by the tuna? David Peters New York, Nov.
