Even though I had to work most of the weekend, I enjoyed a few striking nature encounters, including an opportunity to observe a Cooper’s Hawk chase a rabbit across an expanse of suburbia. If you were wondering, the rabbit won this encounter. Corey enjoyed some good birding on both Saturday and Sunday mornings.

As well as being an excellent location to try the local variants of curry (bunny chow is not a curry with rabbit but a curry served in a hollowed out bread loaf – better than it sounds) it’s a good place to pick up a few coastal species. And a visit to the province often means a visit to Durban, the principal city.

Western Grebes, Clark’s Grebes, Wood Ducks, American White Pelicans, and a few Short-billed Dowitchers made up some of the highlights. My second morning at the headquarters, one of these beautiful owls swooped right over my head, in an effort to snag a small Cottontail Rabbit that was nibbling on the lawn. The bunny got away.

Brown Pelicans are not an unusual sight on the California coast. Raptors and other predatory birds have largely rebounded, and there seems to be be no shortage of Brown Pelicans, Peregrine Falcons and Bald Eagles. With a six-figure population now, Cackling Geese are an abundant visitor the west coast and the Aleutians.

I watched the Australian Pelican, Chestnut Teal and Silver Gulls in the shallows whilst I had a warm drink. Australian Pelican, Chestnut Teal and Silver Gulls. There are 104 of these artistic bollards and each group has a rabbit painted on it somewhere for children to find! It appears to be a Major Mitchell Cockatoo in his cage.

Caspian Terns in the back, large flocks of ducks or all the regular dabbling varieties, American White Pelican s staked out in the center, ibis, herons, and egrets set against the crackling soundtrack of Red-winged Blackbird s and Boat-tailed Grackle s.
