It may be hard to swallow, but Bumpus could get bumped to the back burner

This week, a new study was published about Sparrows in Nebraska, that in some ways resembles the study by Bumpus and may well be a better example of Natural Selection in birds. The new study is about Cliff Swallows ( Petrochelidon pyrrhonota ) in southwestern Nebraska. The researchers collected and measured these birds as well.

The petition relied on a genetic and ecological analysis by Dr. Robert Zink, a biologist at the University of Nebraska (the “ Zink study ”). CESAR had alleged that Dr. Zink would suffer professional and reputational injuries because FWS rejected his research, but the court found that inadequate.

Some Chinese Pheasants

This turned out to be nice for one researcher who thus could do the research for her Ph.D. Interestingly, in her work, the researcher found that the birds live in small groups dominated by a single male. A bit surprisingly (at least to me), the Kalij Pheasant has been introduced and established as a gamebird in Hawaii.
