Birding at a Historic Sporting Estate

10,000 Birds

Red-headed Woodpeckers chattered to each other as they flew from tree to tree, and I marveled at just how many I spotted. Red-bellied Woodpeckers and Eastern Bluebirds rounded out the species near the pond, but in the distance I noted a Red-tailed Hawk , as well as the regular calls of a Northern Bobwhite.

Winter Wanderland

I was high and happy, not from “420” drugs but from the altitude and the anticipation of seeing woodpeckers and owls I had never seen before. After a pleasant morning with ducks, crisp snow and sunshine, we followed the wildlife trail on our way out. What is 100% true is the flight number I took into Denver: 420.

Visitors on the Range

Besides the American bison that the refuge was founded to protect, there are pronghorns, elk, bighorn sheep, mule and white-tailed deer, and black bears.
