Captive bred geese and reintroduction went hand in hand with active population management, including predator control and habitat protection. In addition to historic habitat loss and hunting, Nenes face introduced predators such as mongoose and feral cats. With help, the Nene population has increased to around 2,000 individuals.

The combined effects of hunting, habitat loss and predation by introduced animals like rats and mongoose have extirpated the species from some islands and reduced numbers significantly on others. With assistance from the Negril Area Environmental Protection Trust (NEPT) a boardwalk and nature centre have been established.

An African Penguin peers protectively around its fluffy chick. Today, there are more than 3,000 birds at this accessible colony and they are protected by fences and stiff fines for human disturbance. On the mainland they face predation from domestic cats, dogs, genets, mongoose and Cape Gulls which steal their chicks and eggs.

In some regions of the world, the carnivore landscape is taken up by many different cats at the middle and larger range, and by things like civets and mongoose at the smaller end. For the same reason that other invasive do better than the natives, feral Cats outhunt native predators, and native prey are not as protected against them.
