“Bird-friendly design” is becoming a common term in architectural and city planning circles and proponents can point to a successful initiative, the retrofitting of New York City’s Javits Center which reduced bird deaths by 90%. ’s Lights Out DC, to name a few. It’s not a bad idea.

There’s also an eBird hotspot for one of the best-known claimants to the title of The Center of the Universe: Times Square in New York City – though with eight species recorded, it certainly didn’t earn this title based on avian diversity or abundance.

Pigeon Guillemot Cepphus columba both above and below Glaucous-winged Gull Larus glaucescens both above and below Beyond those birds we didn’t see many species at all unless we were in one of Seattle’s many fine parks.

Redgannet, you’ll have to come visit New York City sometime soon. are up next, with a wonderful Australian species: It is very hard to choose a Best Bird of the Year any year. This weird little skulking waterfowl is a species I had hoped to chance upon in various places for quite some time. Clare (and Grant!)

During my previous five trips to Indonesia, I only heard but never caught a glimpse of three species. Now my tally stands at four species seen and a fifth heard-only. 2015 was challenging, at best, on a personal level but it was a fantastic year for birds in New York City. Sounds good to me! A country-first?

Plume hunting raged supreme 150 years ago, when egret feathers were part of a worldwide trade in feathers and other bird parts, used for women’s hats and other articles of clothing (but mostly hats), delighting the upper classes and practically wiping out bird species.
