Ferret 492 — a black-footed ferret, Mustela nigripes — raises her head from a black-tailed prairie dog’s burrow, sniffs the April night. The ferret raises her head again — up periscope — and hesitates. Russell National Wildlife Refuge. We’ll do this until the dawn breaks over eastern Montana.
