I have received countless numbers of wild birds mangled and/or killed by outdoor/feral cats, such as the Orange-crowned Warbler pictured here. Can you convince yourselves that your cat does not kill birds, when statistics show pet cats only bring home 23% of their kills? There is no moral ambiguity here.

Ethical vegetarianism is the thesis that killing and eating animals is morally wrong whenever equally nutritious plant-based alternatives are available. Causing an animal to suffer for no good reason is cruel, and our ordinary commonsense morality tells us in no uncertain terms that cruelty is wrong. No one disputes premise (3).

Kills in Canada, Alaska and Mexico are not included in the count. Texas and North Dakota together account for 88% of the total yearly kill of sandhill cranes. You may not agree with it… but for millions of people across this nation hunting is a moral thing to do. Tennessee found that out in January. But is this for real?

The NY Times article Keith linked to earlier today (see here ) points out that fur sales are up 9% over last year and from this statistic goes on to infer that "fur is back in style." Each semester when I teach Contemporary Moral Issues, on the first day of class I begin with a survey. Just how do Chinese workers kill raccoon dogs?"
