Of all the dollars spent bagging ducks, a piece of the pie goes to the federal duck stamp program , which just went on sale; anyone over the age of 16 who wants to hunt migratory ducks needs to buy the stamp annually, and the funds raised go toward conservation and preserving and improving habitat for ducks and hunters alike.

Not only did we not expect to see this seabird this far inland, it was a life bird for me! She made a fool of me when I first met her, and again when she left me.

And fun and food are, I’d submit, not enough reason to fell a bird in which only one in three pairs manages to raise a single chick each season; a bird that has captured the imagination and hearts of tens of thousands of people, whose sonorous purr floats down from on high like the voice of a pterosaur.
