The Veterinary Medical Association Executives (VMAE) held its annual meeting on July 14 in Denver. John Tramontana, executive director of the Michigan VMA, won this year's Executive of the Year Award, and Dr. Randy Wheeler, executive director of the Iowa VMA, won the Distinguished Service Award.

The Iowa Board of Regents approved $11.2 million for an underground vivarium that will house University of Iowa animal research laboratories. The 35,000-square-foot facility would connect the Medical Education Research Facility and Carver Biomedical Research Building on the west side of campus. From the Des Moines Register.

Although it was previously believed that cats were also safe, a cat in Iowa has now tested positive for the 2009 H1N1 influenza virus. The American Veterinary Medical Association (AVMA) and the American Association of Feline Practitioners (AAFP) are reminding pet owners monitor their pets’ health closely. Cats should be monitored.
