The Pelican is not a New Zealand Bird

For starters New Zealand didn’t seem to have or have ever had the right type of wetlands to sustain a population of this large piscivore. Like Snowy Owls or crossbills they are also prone to irruptions, caused by Australia’s extreme climate, that have seen birds wandering as far from Australia as Indonesia, Palau, and Fiji.

Best Bird of the Year 2012

2012 has certainly been a bumper year for me with an estimated year list of around 3,000 species after extensive travels to South Africa, Ethiopia, South Korea, Indonesia, the Russian Far East, United Kingdom, Peru, Guatemala and Panama. And, the best thing was that it did not require tapes, just the right habitat and good ears and patience.
