Where to See Kiwi (and other birds) During the Rugby World Cup

This makes it a particularly exciting time in New Zealand as the Rugby World Cup begins in two days, and the competition is being held right here in New Zealand (I would imagine they might be more excited if they hadn’t just lost two matches to Australia and South Africa, their big rivals in the Tri-Nations).

Birding Kadavu and Nadi in Fiji

More importantly the airport in Nadi (pronounced Nandi) on the main island of Viti Levu is a major air hub and frequent stop on flights between the United States and Australia or New Zealand. But the star of Kadavu was also the easiest species to see in the village, the Crimson Shining-parrot.

As climates are transformed, habitats plundered, and nonnative fauna carried to virgin hunting grounds, extinction rates are increasing.

Getting the Hang of Royal NP

Not every huge white bird was a parrot though, and the lake also had a Great Egret among the Australian Grebes , Eurasian Coots and Dusky Moorhens. One of Australia’s prettiest parrots, the Crimson Rosella. I didn’t really see anything rare, but its a lovely place to reacquaint myself with the common stuff.

Centennial Park, Sydney

They are one of the most attractive of Australia’s parrots, and one of the most common, benefiting from the planting of attractive flowering shrubs. The lake was filled with families of Dusky Moorhens and Purple Swamphens (or Pukeko as we call them in New Zealand), all tending small groups of black chicks.
