Because of its distance to the mainland, Hawaii is home to over 60 species of endemic birds. Over time, the webbing in its toes has decreased, and its longer lakes and shorter wings also make walking easier for this species. In some regions of the world, the carnivore landscape is taken up by many different cats at the middle and larger range, and by things like civets and mongoose at the smaller end. Also, feral Cats on islands seem to be a serious problem, causing the extirpation of some indigenous species. They are invasive species.

But, as with so many other species, these birds have been left to do their own whistle blowing. West Indian Whistling Ducks are the largest of the eight different whistling duck species. With assistance from the Negril Area Environmental Protection Trust (NEPT) a boardwalk and nature centre have been established.
