This put Coffee in an impossible position - he needed to rehome the pythons because they were illegal in Florida, but the FWC was threatening to face him with additional criminal charges if he did so. The 10-year-old Boa was pregnant and had been raised by McAdam since it was a baby. Chris Coffee did not commit any criminal acts.

Mating pairs are faithful for life and share the tasks of raising the young. Illegal capture for the wild animal trade is an obvious peril for such a charismatic species, but this big blue bird is also hunted both for its meat and feathers. The Hyacinth Macaw doesn’t start a family until it is seven years old.

The combined effects of hunting, habitat loss and predation by introduced animals like rats and mongoose have extirpated the species from some islands and reduced numbers significantly on others. Between 1985 and 1991, the ducks suffered a further drastic decline with fewer than 100 birds estimated from Grand Cayman.
