Who can resist penguins and whales? The section South Georgia Wildlife describes 65 species of birds, 20 species of sea mammals, nearly 60 species of insects, and more than 40 species of flowering and nonflowering plants. South Georgia is home to the King Penguin, the second largest penguin in the world.

Finally in 1799, the first visitors on this volcanic land were a group of French seal hunters who were after the fur seals that can be found hauled out on the beaches for fur and oil, which almost wiped out the local population of the species. Marion has a fascinating history with invasive species.

You can see about 13% of the world’s bird species at the Harvard University Museum of Natural History’s new exhibit. Not cool, British raptor hunters.

Another great birding adventure book is The Jewel Hunter by Chris Gooddie (Princeton Univ. Brit birder Goodie didn’t do an ordinary big year; he decided he would see every Pitta species in the world (32 at the time) in one year. I think of The Jewel Hunter often when I travel to foreign countries, wishing I could do it like Goodie did.

Lacking, as I do, a birding reputation that would make people part with cash for my time I’ll have to go for the rarity hunters and put together an itinerary of highlights that can’t be missed. And of course you’ll be keen to keep an eye open for Mantell’s Moa , one of ten species you should see on your tour.

Even if you don’t live in the summer range of a particular species, you may have opportunities to observe it while it passes through, especailly if you live in an active flyway, like I happen to. Because the ancestor of this species of bird migrated, and the migratory adaptation and all that entails were passed on.
