South Africa is their steward and have been declared Special Nature Reserves under the South African Environmental Management: Protected Areas Act in 2003, which restricts activities on the islands to research and conservation management. It is still volcanically active with researchers periodically discovering new flows.

Who can resist penguins and whales? The section South Georgia Wildlife describes 65 species of birds, 20 species of sea mammals, nearly 60 species of insects, and more than 40 species of flowering and nonflowering plants. South Georgia is home to the King Penguin, the second largest penguin in the world.

Mack tells the story of how he set up a research station, and a life, in Papua New Guinea. Another great birding adventure book is The Jewel Hunter by Chris Gooddie (Princeton Univ. Brit birder Goodie didn’t do an ordinary big year; he decided he would see every Pitta species in the world (32 at the time) in one year.
