I agree with eBird that the Asian Glossy Starling is “fierce-looking” Appropriately, it is an invasive species in places such as Taiwan, where some papers recommend reducing the population.

Liberal or literal?

The Collared Finchbill is found quite commonly in Taiwan, N Indochina and S China, but being present in Beijing would extend its range by over 450 miles to the north and eBird were keen to get some additional details when I tried to submit the sighting. I admit to having copped out on this one.

They bred on a number of islands near Japan and Taiwan, and ranged widely and abundantly from the Aleutian Islands south through California. But within a couple of decades, it’s effects on both wildlife and humanity became apparent. They were secure in their isolated home here until humanity came to Laysan in the 1890s.

Presumably, this also leads to income inequality, if parallels to humans are any guidance. Apparently, this is part of a broader trend – it has also been observed in Taiwan ( source ). As scientists have found. The Black-winged Kite has (at least in my impression) become more frequent in Shanghai in the past few years.

It looks at factors determining the presence of Black-winged Kites on Taiwan, where the species is a new resident. Surprisingly (at least from a biased human perspective), 97% of the deserters are female ( source ). Interestingly, the factors cited there may also explain the expanding presence of the species in Shanghai.

The bird “spent five months on Mindoro Island in the Philippines during the non-breeding season and migrated through Taiwan, the Chinese east coast, and the Korean peninsula” and on to the Russian Far East (indicating a certain lack of solidarity with Ukraine). This is the dark blue adult male (also shown on top of this post).
