Though I have been birding for a few years now, I had only birded west of the Mississippi once before my recent trip to Austin, Texas. Because of this, areas around the city that were once sleepy are now “urban,” with humans and wildlife struggling to keep up. I saw this first-hand during an afternoon studio walk.

A Different Kind of Spring

I am surprised they do not have a stronger foothold on the Lower Rio Grande Valley in Texas, since they appeared to have no habitat requirements besides trees. I always appreciated when the Mississippi Kites stooped to the level of us lowly humans. As soon as the local thermals get going, birds tend to stay pretty high up.

Located between the Mississippi River and Illinois River, the refuge encompasses 9,225 acres of riverine and floodplain habitat scattered around the confluence of the rivers. The refuge is already open to upland game hunting and sport fishing. The refuge was established in 1958 to protect and enhance habitat for migratory birds.
