Clearly a win for the damn livestock industry. A state law mandating "humane treatment" of downed livestock headed for the slaughterhouse was unanimously overturned Monday by the Supreme Court. He asked whether cows, chickens, sheep and some of the other animals that we eat are usually treated and killed in a humane manner. The meat industry will say yes, of course, all animals are treated and killed humanely. In my opinion, the crux of the question touches on what is “humane.” Here is my opinion.

Last week there was a slew of articles about the agreement in Ohio between the farm industry and animal welfare activists to expand cage sizes for calves (veal), hens and pigs. Consumers can help the beef industry save itself by both buying less and choosing grass-fed. This would result in improved human health, decreased environmental destruction and better animal welfare. Now, with mounting public awareness, the meat industry may soon realize that investment in sustainable practices is not just a nice idea.
