They are harmless to humans and their horns are used for wrestling other males for mating rights. In Asia they are even commonly kept as pets! Their stealth allows them to exist in close-proximity to humans and their hunting prowess means they still survive on small prey even when other larger mammals have been exterminated.

Another paper reviews information on Oriental Pied Hornbills raiding the nests of various bird species in Singapore and even pet bird cages. One paper describes them breeding in a human settlement in abandoned clay jars. for decorating the headgear and house interiors by the local tribals, at least in parts of India ( source ).

” The website www.jwcpheasants.com seems to endorse polygamy for this species despite this being illegal in the USA for other animals such as humans. The species is also hunted for local consumption in Meghalaya (India), according to the HBW. The site states that in captivity, “two hens can be paired with one male.”
