When we first landed here in Tucson, Arizona, fate worked her magic, and one of the first people I met was Luke Safford. Luke is a coordinator with the Tucson Audubon Society, and was incredibly helpful with getting my feet on the ground, as far as South East Arizona Birding. The American Bittern makes a pretty regular appearance.

Tucson Arizona is turning out to be a very birdy area. I have to admit I stole some parts of that phrase from the director of the Tucson Audubon Society, Jonathan E. Situated in the Santa Rita Mountains, south of Tucson. This same area had a very strong population of Acorn Woodpeckers. eBird Submissions – 377.

Little Big Year – Week 36: Southern New Mexico hotspots.

This nice little group of shorebirds, including a Killdeer, three Long-billed Dowitchers and a Spotted Sandpipers all got together for a photo. Here is my first ever group of Gamble’s Quail , hanging around a huge feeder block. Right in our camp, we found Ladder-backed Woodpeckers. A couple of wrens were early morning visitors.

For example, and I expect a few of you know what I am referring to… if you photograph a “goshawk” in the middle of Tucson, and the area’s leading birders and everyone else tells you it’s a Cooper’s Hawk …you should listen to them. There were lots of Morning Duvs and Pilleated Woodpeckers out.
