A close encounter with a couple of White Rhinos gave me a good opportunity to get a proper look at some Red-billed Ox-peckers Buphagus Erythrorhynchus that often accompany them. The Black Rhino is a browser with a hooked upper lip. Ironically the biggest similarity between the species is their colour (grey).

Cheetahs are regulated by the Species Survival Plan (SSP), which tracks a species’ genetic lines in zoos and animal parks around the world and makes recommendations as to where specific animals should be placed for successful breeding opportunities. Only approximately 12,400 cheetahs remain in the wild.

Elephant The big – two species of elephant are now recognized as occuring in Africa, the smaller and more secretive Forest Elephant and the larger, more familiar African or Bush Elephant. The little – the two species of black Buffalo Weavers obtain their appellation from their dark coloration that resembles their fearsome namesake.

Photos courtesy of Mosetlha Bush Camp A dusty-red road leads me through Marico bushveld deeper into the 750 square kilometers large wilderness of the Madikwe Game Reserve – the 4th largest reserve in South Africa, home to 350 bird and 66 mammal species, some 4 hours’ drive from Johannesburg. The others follow, some dozen animals in all.

The first to cross is an old female with a two-year old baby.
