The air was cooler in the Redwood Grove than the surrounding, sunlit areas of the San Francisco Botanical Garden. The place was full of parents with toddlers, kindergarten school groups, and walkers like us. My mom and I were visiting the gardens while we waited for my brother to get out of his classes at UC Berkeley.

As I always do on the way home, following a short visit to the San Francisco Bay Area, I take in at least one of the National Wildlife Refuges (NWR) found in the Sacramento Valley. This incredible group of birds foraging in this wetland created an amazing jumble of sound.

Ashy Storm-Petrel : Approximately 50% of the world’s Ashy Storm-Petrels breed on Farallones NWR , a group of rocky islands 30 miles from San Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge. Thus, most of these federal lands are at minimal risk of being sold to states or private interests.

The absence of the Caribbean means that ABA Area—and the ABA—excludes important aspects of the avian diversity of the United States.

Why this one city alone would be named for birds, in this country of 1,800 species, is unclear, but it could very well be a designation inspired by the nearby Islas Ballestas, an uninhabited island group just offshore from Pisco and home to enormous breeding colonies of Humboldt Penguins , Inca Terns , Peruvian Boobies , and many other species.
