The traditional, supposedly humane answer to the glut of feral cats has been institution of “TNR” programs – trap, neuter, return. Marra and Santella are very much anti-TNR, a view that is shared by others, including People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA), not to mention Birdchick.

Nonprofit pet protection groups would manage the program and be responsible for ensuring that cat caretakers take the required steps. Several members of the Audubon Society said the plan fails to answer questions about how cats will be managed and what rights neighbors will have if the cats become a nuisance. Because I've been thinking about the evolution of my own thinking--and languaging--regarding animal rights. Both animal rights groups and animal welfare groups use "compassion" frequently. No matter how they are treated, is it right to use them? Why all the quotation marks? Not that I'm giving you a deadline.

We went this route because he isn't putting weight on his back right leg anymore (you can even see the muscle atrophy--look at the difference--it's not because of the angle). Finally, I was asked to participate in a new TNR group in my town that started largely because of my oodles of questions and setting of policy for Project Treadstone!

Project Treadstone If anyone in Palm Beach County wants to get involved in the Trap/Neuter/Return (TNR) of feral cats, now is the time, as the county's Spay Shuttle is back in business (but for a whopping $40/cat rather than the original $15), and Pahokee ($25/cat) is open as well. Of the 20 cats TNR'd so far I've had to pay about $150.
