50 surviving horses were rescued. The Humane Society of the United States, SPCA of East Texas and Humane Society of North Texas worked with the Smith County District Attorney's Office to rescue 50 horses from a Lindale property. The group also included pregnant mares and a few yearlings.

The holiday season can be challenging for local shelters and rescues, says Renee Coughlin of Best Friends Pet Care. Beneficiaries range from large animal shelters like the Central Florida SPCA and the Southside Animal Shelter in Indianapolis to small rescue groups like Save a Dog in Texas and Big Fluffy Dog Rescue in Massachusetts.
